Welcome

Governor Gene Issues a Challenge!

Hello Mo-Ark,

I can hardly believe it is only weeks until our Mid-Winter Conference.  I certainly hope you are planning on joining us in Springdale, Arkansas, March 2-4 for a fun and informative weekend.  As an added attraction this year, our Kiwanis International President, Alan Penn, will be joining us. This will be his "official" visit to the Missouri-Arkansas District.  Please come and help us give Alan and his wife Jerri and big Mo-Ark welcome.

To start the fun off for this conference, we thought we would make a "friendly challenge" in the pre-registration process.  At this moment, Missouri has only a few more Kiwanians registered than does the host state, Arkansas.  Being that Governor-Elect Gary is from Missouri and I'm from Arkansas, we thought we would pass a challenge out to the Kiwanians of our respective states.  How would you like to see Governor-Elect Gary wearing a Hog Hat and "calling those hogs"? That's what he WILL be doing if there are more pre-registered Arkies than Missouri Kiwanians.  Of course on the other hand, if there are more from Missouri, then I guess I will have to don some "Black & Gold" and do some type of MIZZOU cheer (if they have one)...

This of course is only for fun as I hope you all know.  We are one Big, United, GREAT Kiwanis district that I am very proud to be a part of.

Please go to the Mid-Winter Conference page and get registered for this great conference. (Especially those of you from Arkansas!) I look forward to seeing everyone there.

Thanks!

Governor Gene

Missouri-Arkansas Kiwanis Mid-Winter scheduled for Spring Arrival

In 2012 the Mo-Ark Mid-Winter Conference will be just a little closer to Spring.  Normally in mid to late February, our “Mid-Winter” will convene in March this time.   We will meet at the Holiday Inn of Northwest Arkansas in Springdale on March 2-4.  We are honored this year to have Kiwanis International President Alan Penn attending our conference, and he will be the keynote speaker at the Saturday luncheon.

On Friday evening we get the group activities started off with a reception and a dinner where we will be entertained by a local group.   At the first general session on Saturday morning many Mo-Ark clubs will be presented awards for their work this past year.  Kiwanis forums are scheduled Saturday morning and afternoon on various subjects designed to help individual Kiwanians and their clubs do their most effective work in their communities.  Among the forum subjects are—a club officer’s panel discussion, the Eliminate Project, and healthy lifestyles for children. As usual, there will be activities for Kiwanis partners, and many activities and excursions for kids.  Be sure to bring children and grandchildren.

Something new this year is a Club Basket Raffle.  Mo-Ark clubs will be asked to bring a basket loaded with very nice things from their local area.  The baskets will be part of a raffle Saturday afternoon.  Proceeds will go to the Kiwanis Worldwide Service Project - ELIMINATE.  Details will be in a Networker.

Clubs are asked to bring a display showing details and photographs of their favorite club project.  This is one good way of sharing fund raisers that work and projects that are uplifting.  Exchange ideas that work!   As usual, there will be a Silent Auction with money going to the Past Lieutenant Governors Council.

Please bring some good items for the Silent Auction and bid often! For registration for Mid-Winter, go to the Mo-Ark District web site at moarkkiwanis.org.  You will be able to register on line this year!  Paper registration will also still be available to use.

Aktion Clubs Take the Spotlight

An Aktion Club Speech Contest was a new featured event in the Aktion Club strand of  the August 2011 Missouri-Arkansas Kiwanis District Convention in Hot Springs, Arkansas.  Four Missouri-Arkansas Aktion Club members delivered speeches on the Kiwanis International Theme:  “How have your leadership skills improved from being a member of Aktion Club?”  Their speeches are attached. All the speeches were winners; Ron Schneider, Jr., was named the overall winner.  His speech was forwarded to Kiwanis International, and he is officially an Aktion Club Ambassador.  Congratulations to all participants in the Aktion Club Speech Contest on August 6!   District Aktion Club Administrator Diane Gollihugh facilitated the contest, and Region IV Trustee Dave Tuck videoed the speeches.

Do you know any Distinguished Members?

As we have wrapped up the month of May—Membership month—we want to acknowledge those members who have spread the Kiwanis spirit. Have your clubs check their rosters to see if they include any members who have met the Distinguished Member criteria.
1.   Sponsor two or more members during current year2.  Attend either a mid-year, zone or regional conference, or registered to attend the international or district conventions3.  Participate in two or more service projects during the yearEvery club needs Distinguished Members who "light the fire" for membership and help grow their club!

To register your members, the club president and secretary can fill out the 2011–12 Distinguished Member online form.

Distinguished Members will be awarded a lapel pin and will receive a special thank-you from President Sylvester Neal, which includes a "Light the Fire" lapel pin. This pin is awarded to members who are continuing to grow the Kiwanis organization by sponsoring new members. Special recognition will be bestowed upon these leaders at the 2012 international convention in New Orleans.

Let’s get the pins ordered and worn by these members now to inspire others to strive for Distinguished status.(Note: the lapel pins and letter are being sent directly to the member, on a weekly basis.)

Message from the District Governor

GENE BARTLEY

Welcome to the Missouri-Arkansas District website.  The focus of each and every Kiwanis Club in our International organization is “Serving the Children of the World.”  This mission statement encompasses many areas such as hunger, disease, safety and any other problem that our children might face from day to day.

Jan and I invite you to look deeper into our district’s website and see what the Kiwanis Clubs in Missouri and Arkansas are doing for the children of our two states, North America and the World, by clicking on the “Service Projects” button. Or, click on the ‘Service Leadership” button and see the many youth organizations our Kiwanis Clubs have in place where we teach servant leadership; from elementary school age through college age, as well as for adults with disabilities.

If you like what you see, please contact us and we will help find a club in your immediate area. You can then visit one of their meetings and see how you could join in the efforts to improve your community and help the children in your town.

“More Hands – More Service, filling the needs of others.” That is our theme in Mo-Ark this year.  We want to increase our numbers to be able to increase our service to our children.  Come Join Us!

Gene & Jan Bartley

What if you could save a baby's life?

With The Eliminate Project, you can. Maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) kills one baby every nine minutes. But three doses of a 60-cent vaccine can protect mothers and babies. Kiwanis and UNICEF have joined forces to bring this vaccine to 38 countries, eliminating MNT from the face of the Earth. What can you do right now? Learn about MNT and advocate for the cause. Participate in our fundraisers. Over the next few years, the work we do will change the world. Find out more at www.TheEliminateProject.org.
